Fashion Design Syllabus
Elna Manual Winding Bobbins, Inserting the Bobbin, Threading the Machine, and Pulling Up the Bobbin Thread

While providing supplies is optional, most students will find it more rewarding to use to use their own materials. Supplies will provided to those students who do not supply their own materials, but ownership of the finished projects made with school supplied material will be retained by the school.

14-24 February 2012Fashion History Paper
Write a two-page, typewritten, double-spaced paper on your fashion history as an individual. Include information such as your body image and what has influenced it; how you feel about fashion, and what you think about a lot. Do you avoid fashion? Is it a concern to you? (why or why not) How do you feel about your self-image and where you are currently in meeting your goals, etc.

31 January through 24 February 2012Sewing Simplicity #2290
After getting instructor's permission, cut fabric and continue following handout.

25-27 January 2012Simplicity #2290
This pattern is sized based on hip measurement, so select the proper pattern size:
31-32½ — XS
35-37 — S
39-41 — M
43-45 — L
47-49 — XL

You will cut out the appropriate pattern size and then pin it on your fabric— DO NOT CUT YOUR FABRIC UNTIL I HAVE CHECKED IT!

23 January 2012Choose the Correct Pattern Size
The first step to making a garment that fits well is to choose the correct pattern size. This may seem obvious, but it's surprising how many sewers start with the wrong size, then end up making a lot of adjustments to get a good fit.

Read the handout and then create your own personal measurement chart as discussed in the handout. Based on your measurements determine which size you will sew using Simplicity #2290. Confirm your selection with information from the Simplicity web site.

19 January 2012Using a Sewing Machine
When your name is called, demonstrate how to wind a bobbin on a conventional sewing machine. Then thread the machine and stitch a row of regular stitches (2 to 2.5 mm); machine basting (3 to 4 mm); and reinforcement stitching (1 to 1.5 mm) on a scrap piece of fabric. Using another piece of fabric (approximately 6-in by 6-in) demonstrate a French seam and an edge-stitch.

While waiting, work on the worksheet (Pages 480 to 497 of the Clothing (red) textbook).

09 January 2012Introduction
This course is a continuation of Beginning Fashion Design and Construction. More emphasis will be placed on the creation of original designs. Emphasis will include color, line, texture and unique and individual styling. Students may use the Internet as well as computer programs to assist them with their designs. Students will be encouraged to purchase their own fabric and patterns, as approved by the teacher.

Review the use of the sewing machine.
