Complete the planning form passed out to create a personal fashion for yourself or someone else
(you will be responsible to purchase the supplies necessary to complete your project.

17-19 April 2019 — 27 Dresses
The movie “27 Dresses” is about a woman who has been a bridesmaid 27 times, with one ugly dress after another.
As you watch the movie answer the following questions. Next class you will design your own “bridesmaid dress”
or if you would rather, a dress for your best friend to wear to one of the spring formal dances.

13 February–14 March 2019 — Learn to Crochet
Leisure Arts has a number of videos available that cover the basics of crochet. If you are still not
sure how to hold your hook or yarn these videos might help you. They have included both left and right
hand versions: LEARN TO CROCHET NOW!.
Leisure Arts also has a number of videos available that cover the basics of knitting. If you are interested
in learning this techniques check out: LEARN TO KNIT NOW!.
Thanks to a information from the Craft Yarn Council the classes will be learning the basics of crochet. We will start with the
basics of crochet with the Learn to Crochet handout
from the Craft Yarn Council.
The Craft Yarn Council also has a Learn to Knit handout.

14 January through 08 February 2019 — Simplicity 2290 Pajama Pants
Following the directions passed out in class assemble your pajama pants. Remember that you
must get instructors approval before you actually cut your fabric.
Based on your measurements determine which size you will sew using
Simplicity #2290. Confirm your selection with information
from the Simplicity pattern back. Then actually try on the pajama pants the size you
felt would fit you the best.
The pajama pants will be graded using rubric. Please take the time to see what can affect your grade.

Notions
Written pattern instructions can give you step-by-step guidelines for
constructing a garment. It is following these fine details that will
empower you to get better fitting and professhional looking graments,
regardless of whose patterns you use!

17-20 December 2018 — History of Costume Through TV & Film
Have you seen television shows or movies set in the past, such as That 70's Show,
The Rosa Parks Story, or The Notebook. What decade was represented by each
particular show? What fashion trends indicate about people and history?
Choose a decade from the 1900's, research TV shows/films that were set in that period and
create a PowerPoint/Google Slides presentation to represent the fashions and social relevant
information from the time of the items peak popularity. Discuss the the trends within the
context of social history.
The completed presentation will be uploaded to TurnItIn.
10–14 December 2018 — Christmas Tree Ornament
Create a Christmas Tree Ornament following instructions by
Life After Laundry which have been summarized on the linked
handout.
06 December 2018 — Hour of Code (upload your presentation to TurnItIn)
Today's activity is a set of 20 self-guided puzzles that teach the basics of computer science for
users with no prior experience. In each puzzle, you write a program that gets a character through
a maze. The activity uses Blockly, a visual programming language that has blocks you drag and
drop to write programs. The characters in one of the activities is from
Star Wars
Choose either Blocks or JavaScript (you can switch between if you want at any time).
To get credit for today's activity you need to print out the completion certificate with your
name printed in it:
04 December 2018 — Fundamentals of Fashion
From Haute Couture to Mass Market, fashion affects each of us in one way or another. The class
will explore Fundamentals of Fashion.
Assignment:
28–30 November 2018 — The Fashion Industry
Read Chapter 7, Fashion Industry, in the "Clothing–Fashion, Fabrics, and Construction" (red) textbook
(pages 134–153). Pair and share what you read. Complete the
activity. You need to key/type your responses in a Word document that you will upload to TurnItIn.
25 October 2018 — Sewing Machines
As we begin the next phase of the course, it is important that each student is
aware of what they need to do to be safe in the class room as well as how to
operate the sewing machine. The sewing machine is capable of stitching various
different stitches and the following
worksheets will help you review that
information. The information is in the Clothing text beginning on page 500.

The class will judge the exhibits against the standards that have been discussed and decided upon.
25 September 2018 — Fashion Trends
Clothing has been synonymous with a person’s position in the social structure.
“It not only revealed your social position and gender, but your occupation
[each one had its own costume], religious affiliation, and regional origin,
as well. The political culture of the time was reflected in the way people
dressed and the way people dressed determined how they were perceived by
others and by themselves”.
Can you think of any groups today that are identified by their dress?
Activity:
A Day in the Life is an interactive computer based activity where you will
dress different individuals based on their social class.
After you have dressed both the male and female from each social class, reflect on what you found
out about 18th century fashion for each social class. Conclude your handout by stating which class you
think that you would most like to be part of.
Handout is due at the end of the period, please give it to the substitute.

Using your own fabric or something from the scrap bin create a "softie" out of two 6-inch squares of fabric and some odds and ends.

15 August 2018 — The Why of Clothes
Clothing does much more than just cover the body. Your appreciation of clothing will be
broadened as you become more aware of the influences clothing has on you. Throughout
history, clothing has had a great meaning. It has indicated people's handicraft skills,
artistic imagination, and cultural rituals. It has also reflected advances in technology.
Assignment: The Why of Clothes
Read Chapter 1 (pages 10-19) of "Fashion"ť (black text book) to complete the handout.
07–13 August 2018 — Fashion Designers
Assignment: Write a 5-paragraph essay to inform about one
of Top Fashion Designers. You will be
given time in class to research and compile your work. Include at least one
photograph of your designer's signature work. Essay will be due August
13th at the end of class. LATE essays will be accepted with penalty.
Some ideas to help in the research of a fashion designer. You do not have to answer every
question, but find as much information as you can:
01-03 August 2018 — Course Introduction
Introduce possible projects that the class will be working on: Pin Cushion/Softee, Pillow Case,
Sun Dress (Little Dresses for Africa), Pajama Pants, Crochet/Knitting, Up-cycle/Recycle Project,
etc.
